Join the SBEG Board!

"For nearly 35 years, SBEG has been at the heart of making South Bank the place it is today - an internationally important destination, an economic powerhouse, and a real and authentic neighbourhood with diverse business, residential and student communities...

...we are a member-led, not for profit company, and our work is diverse and wide-ranging.

In line with our vision of working together for a better South Bank for all, we deliver to our members, and have strategic agreements with Lambeth Council, South Bank Business Improvement District, and Jubilee Gardens Trust. We coordinate and direct a significant collective investment across the South Bank and Waterloo neighbourhood, working with our members and partners to ensure that this investment addresses our shared priorities. This includes the annual revenues raised through the pioneering and innovative London S106 agreement, whereby 1% of the Eye’s annual turnover is reinvested in services and initiatives that benefit the neighbourhood.

Following an extensive review of our governance and membership arrangements, we are now creating our new Board, which will work alongside our Members’ Council, which is also new. The Board is member-led, with six Directors that are appointed from SBEG’s full members, and we are now looking for five additional non-member Directors. They will join me, the six member representative Directors, and Nic Durston - SBEG’s Chief Executive - on the Board. Nic leads the SBEG team, who are talented and committed, with extensive knowledge of the neighbourhood.

We are looking for people who have the right skills and experience to ensure that the Board ensures that SBEG works towards its vision, achieves its corporate goals and objectives, and supports and enhances the work of the team. We are also keen to ensure that our Board is diverse and inclusive, reflecting the area’s identity, and those that work, visit, study and live here.

We look forward to hearing from you."

Governance

SBEG has recently completed a comprehensive review of its governance and membership arrangements, and the outcomes are fully supported by its members, partners, and key stakeholders. The outcomes of the review are now being implemented, including the creation of the new Board.

SBEG will also manage and coordinate the work of the Members’ Council, comprised of SBEG’s full members, alongside senior representatives from key strategic partners and stakeholders, including both Members of Parliament, the London Assembly Member for Lambeth and Southwark, South Bank Business Improvement District, Lambeth Council, Southwark Council, the Greater London Authority, South Bank and Waterloo Neighbours, WeAreWaterloo BID, and Jubilee Gardens Trust.

The Members’ Council provides an important forum for SBEG members to discuss key policy and business issues affecting the South Bank area and to engage with key stakeholders. The Members’ Council has specific responsibilities relating to SBEG’s governance, in terms of appointing Member representatives, the approval of the annual accounts, and in agreeing corporate strategy - these are set out in its own terms of reference.

The Role of Board Director

The majority of SBEG’s governance responsibilities sits with the Board of Directors. Directors meet four times a year, and will provide the following:

  • Providing strategic oversight of SBEG’s work and delivery

  • Monitoring financial performance and fiscal management

  • Assessing SBEG’s performance to agreed metrics and measures

  • Maintaining and supporting relationships with members and key stakeholders

  • Supporting and advising the team on all aspects of corporate management and performance

Following the completion of a skills audit, we are keen to appoint Board members with relevant skills and experience in human resources, legal, marketing and sustainability. Further details are provided in the role profile.

Under SBEG’s new governance policies, applications for non-executive Directors are welcome from anyone who is not an employee of a SBEG member organisation. Candidates from underrepresented groups, including those from ethnically diverse backgrounds, women, and those under 40, are encouraged to apply, although we welcome candidates from all backgrounds and experiences.

With the exception of the Chair and Chief Executive Board Directors are not paid, although reasonable expenses are covered.
