Introduction
Transforming a bleak and hostile area into a clean, attractive, welcoming and flourishing place is no easy task. Yet, South Bank Employers' Group has charged itself with that mission.
Improving the physical environment of Waterloo was at the heart of the original establishment of South Bank Employers' Group. Although the South Bank of today is virtually unrecognisable from that of fifteen years ago, there's still much more to be done. Improving the public realm is still a key driver for our work.
Our Urban Design Strategy, published in 2002, identifies a number of key projects which, when achieved, will make a real and lasting difference to the area. These projects form the cornerstone of our work and are founded on the following eight goals:
- Improving the environment, public transport and pedestrian access
- Securing new and improved community facilities
- Encouraging better shopping
- Giving physical expression to the area's identity
- Removing left-over spaces and dead frontages and encouraging more street-level activity
- Maximising the opportunities offered by the riverside walkway
- Implementing an improved regime for management and maintenance of the public realm
- Creating greater interaction between the large corporations and the general public
We actively work in partnership with a broad range of organisations including the London Borough of Lambeth, London Borough of Southwark, Transport for London, London Development Agency, Greater London Authority, Cross River Partnership and the Metropolitan Police Service.
