Official Opening Ceremony of Blackfriars Station Thursday 10 May

9 May 2012

The building work at Blackfriars Station has now finished, and an official opening ceremony will take place on Thursday 10 May. The station, which is the only station in London with entrances on both sides north and south side of the Thames, partially opened in December last year. However, the building work has only finished in recent weeks, with installation of ticket offices on the north bank, completion of two new platforms and 4,400 solar panels installed in the station roof, providing 50% of Blackfriars’ future energy needs.

The official opening of Blackfriars Stations and its south entrance marks the station’s move from a commuter station for the city, to a livelier station for people at evenings and weekends, using the station to access South Bank. The station will demonstrate to commuters the range of quality culture and entertainment available in the area and encourage them to return in their leisure time. Blackfriars’ position with through traffic of trains from Sutton to Bedford will also encourage visitation to South Bank, the cultural heart of London.
